Corvus Corvidae by evelmiina Corvus Corvidae by evelmiina
Messengers of derp, err...death!

I love all corvids and thought of illustrating a few of them in stylized manner. First birdbook I borrowed featured 11 corvids. Second one 16. Just to make sure, I sought a list of all corvids, and according to them, there was actually 40 corvus-species. That's how many there are in the picture now. There's in reality even more, if you counted extinct species, but references were tad hard to find, so I focused on living ones.

Included four mythological ravens and crows too:

Huginn, Muninn, Yatagarasu (three-legged crow) and “crow who stole the fire”, carrying it in kangaroo’s pouch, in Australian Aboriginal myth.

Original ink drawing on 50 x 70 cm (19.7 x 27.6 in), scanned and colored in Photoshop CS5.

Solid color and composition, excellent relationships and balance. Stylistically it is very on the up and up with the sketchy pen-and-ink looks that are very popular right now. If there's anything I could say that is something of a detraction, it's that it's very busy. I understand that you were going for as many members of the Corvis family as you could, but in a world of people with nanosecond attention spans, fewer crows would draw they eye in more. Mostly because there's less to read, but also because there wouldn't be so many ribbons and distracting movement at every turn. Each bird is lovely though. They all have distinct personalities and lives. If I could suggest any way to break it up it would be perhaps to make a triptych of it? Three branch growths in three separate pieces, or maybe two with the third being the trunk? That way if you ever want to sell a piece like this you can charge a bit more. Not that money seems that important to you, there's a lot of love in this.

Omaperäinen, tyylikäs ja sopivasti huumorilla höystetty sukupuu. :)

I will! I should get this printed pretty soon, I'll make some journal and tumblr updates about it, when they're done. They'll be up for international shipping, too.
