sharks in space and jellyfish by evelmiina sharks in space and jellyfish by evelmiina
I honestly haven't done oil pastels since...ages!
We went to Helsinki Sealife with the class to draw (yeah we have classes like that haha) and I tried to be hardcore and try something new, therefore
OIL PASTELS

I got a comment that I should erase the ray's mouth since it looks sort of retarded but to me, it looks just happy XD

I've always loved how unearthly jellyfish look, and I think you captured that here. <3

Please go back and paint some hammersharks because they're the best thing ever and this is so pretty, so very very pretty. ;;
(The retarded ray compensates for the lack of hammersharks though with its cuteness. :star:)

I love how chaotic these look without it seeming sloppy or overwhelming! It really gives an awesome sense of movement. The one on the left is particularly awesome.

Thanks! I'm glad it didn't turn out half-bad, although I was bit worried, trying out oilpastels for the first time in very long time.

I wish I saw pictures of these, scanning doesn't do real media any justice, oil pastels, watercolour and coloured pencils at least look terrible when scanned.
You're really on to something with those jellyfish.. and that derpmanta is so adorable in it's derp-ness hahaha :'D it's so candid..

It's also pain in the ass to clean up the scanner after stuff like oil pastels haha :'D but I agree, they are sort of mediums that should be more carefully adjusted in photoshop. One should actually have the patience to test out the scan quality to make it look as decent as possible. But there's always something that suffers from the 'flattening' effect that scanner does.

Thanks! I was surprised it made such nice look, even though the jellyfish room is pretty dark and the only light, other than the white light of the aquarium is some green lamp which made figuring out the colors pretty interesting.

i also think the mouth just looks happy ^_^
it's good to experiment! especially when you're a student, what is most expectable is to be experimenting.....and you got a good feel for colors. also in addition to what you do regularly with pens etc (color combinations), here with the thick oil pastels you created a "compressed" feeling, the colors sticking to each other and shining as more...or something like that

haha thanks :'D I hope people don't think it's pretentious though, to me it feels good that messing with different materials feels natural, and somehow I'm not expecting myself to make certain kind of artwork. I hope when I just get better at it all, I can apply things better in my 'own style' as well.
